Planning Guide

How to Plan a Honeymoon You'll Never Forget

Your honeymoon isn't a normal vacation. It's the reward after months of planning a wedding, and the first trip you'll take as a married couple. Here's the process I walk every couple through to make sure their honeymoon feels like nothing else they've ever done.

Step 1: Talk about the vibe first

Before you touch a single resort website, sit down together and answer three questions:

You'd be amazed how often couples don't discuss these before booking, then find out mid-trip they wanted different things.

Step 2: Set a real budget

Include everything, not just the resort. Flights, transfers, upgrades, excursions, tips, travel insurance, spending money. A common mistake is booking the room and forgetting the "extras" that add up fast.

Step 3: Pick your window

Most couples want to leave right after the wedding. That's beautiful, but if the wedding is in peak season, prices double. Consider a "minimoon" right after (a short local getaway) and the real honeymoon 4 to 8 weeks later at a better price and less exhausted.

Step 4: Book the resort strategically

The best honeymoon resorts fill up 6 to 12 months out for peak dates. Book early to lock in your first choice and get the best pricing. Many resorts offer honeymoon perks (room upgrade, wine, spa credit, romantic dinner) if you mention you're celebrating; a travel agent knows which ones offer what.

Step 5: Sweat the little details

These are the things that turn a nice honeymoon into a magical one:

Step 6: Unplug

Set an out-of-office. Silence work notifications. Take fewer photos than you think. Be present. This trip is not about content, it's about the two of you at the start of something.
